Have you ever heard of or wanted to try dry needling? Legacy Physical Therapy now offers it as part of your physical therapy treatment, read on to learn more!
Dry needling is a safe & effective therapeutic treatment that can release pain, reduce acute inflammation and promote healing in the body. It involves a thin needle that penetrates the skin and targets a specific muscle point, called a trigger point and promotes blood flow and healing to an area. Trigger points are areas in the muscle that are more tender to the touch and can feel like “knots”.
Dry needling can be very effective for the pelvic floor and areas surrounding the pelvic floor. Muscle tension in areas surrounding the front & back of the hips and low back contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction, treating these muscles via dry needling can be a technique to reduce discomfort. Dry needling is appropriate for most patients but it can not be done with pregnant patients
Dry needling is different from acupuncture, in that acupuncture is based on Chinese medicine and focuses on flow of energy “chi” through the body to treat a variety of muscular and non-muscular conditions. Dry needling on the other hand, can only be performed by a Physical Therapist that went through additional training and has a certificate in dry needling
If you are interested in trying dry needling, you will be screened prior to treatment and we will discuss how to effectively treat what is going on with you!
