How Breathing Impacts Your Pelvic Floor Health

How Breathing Impacts Your Pelvic Floor Health

When you think about pelvic floor health, breathing might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, your breath plays a vital role in how well your pelvic floor functions.

The Diaphragm-Pelvic Floor Connection

Your pelvic floor and diaphragm work together as part of your core system. With every breath you take, these muscles move in sync:

  • Inhale → The diaphragm moves downward, and the pelvic floor naturally relaxes.
  • Exhale → The diaphragm rises, and the pelvic floor gently contracts.

When this rhythm is disrupted due to poor breathing habits, stress, or muscle imbalances, it can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction, such as tightness, weakness, incontinence, or prolapse.

How Improper Breathing Affects the Pelvic Floor

Many people develop breathing patterns that put excess strain on their pelvic floor, such as:

  • Shallow breathing – Limits diaphragm movement, leading to pelvic floor tension and weakness.
  • Breath-holding (especially when lifting or straining) – Increases pressure in the abdomen, which can contribute to prolapse or leakage.
  • Poor coordination between breathing and movement – Can make it harder to engage the pelvic floor properly during exercise or daily activities.

Breathing Techniques to Support Pelvic Floor Health

The good news is that intentional breathing techniques can improve pelvic floor function, relieve tension, and enhance overall well-being. Try these simple strategies:

Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing

  • Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.
  • Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your belly to rise as your diaphragm moves down.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth, feeling your belly gently deflate.

 Exhale with Effort

  • When lifting something heavy, standing up, or exercising, exhale as you exert effort to reduce pressure on your pelvic floor.

By improving your breathing patterns, you can reduce tension, enhance pelvic floor function, and prevent discomfort. If you’re experiencing pelvic floor issues, schedule a FREE discovery call with one of our skilled pelvic floor therapists to start you on your healing journey.
